When people think about organic the first thing that jumps to mind is often organic food.
But there is a growing market in other items like bedding, clothes and other items made out of organic products like cotton.
Think about it, every time a new field of cotton is planted, more pesticides will be added to the environment. That is pesticide that will sit in the ground and flow into our water sources for years to come, even after the field has been dedicated to pesticide free practices.
Another thing to consider is that no matter the level of processing there are still sometimes pesticide residue left on the resultant fabric. There have been cases of allergic reactions triggered by pesticide residue on cotton in those with extremely sensitive skin (such as babies).
Now purchasing organic cotton can sometimes be expensive, but by looking for sales and deals on the internet and at home you can save yourself some money and save the environment.
For example, last night I got off work and stopped by WalMart to grab some food (did you know WalMart carries a number of organic foods and very good prices?), while mooching around the store I found they had 3 piece sets of Organic Cotton Towels (face cloth, hand towel and bath towel) in a variety of colours for just $14.88! Needless to say a set in light blue came home with me.
So consider other ways you can bring organic and environmentally friendly items into your house... and look outside the recycled cardboard box to find them

Awesome topic, Jamie!
It is amazing how much pesticide use is due to the cotton industry!
As with food, we also have to be careful where organic cloth and other material originates. Not all countries have the same restrictions regarding "organic" food or other materials.
This is a good point to be addressed, and one that I try to help people understand. I told a friend recently about some nice 100% organic cotton sheets that I bought and she was just baffled! After a brief introduction to the idea she could not believe she had never even thought about it.
I have read that cotton uses the most pesticides out of all crops!
