I feel very lucky to have several grocery stores near me that not only sell produce grown locally, but label it as so.
I have two grocery stores within two blocks of me, and two more within two miles of me. Living in town does have its advantages. Out of the four grocery stores, however, only one is independent. Independent stores, especially grocery stores, remain a dying breed.
I wish I could purchase all my necessities from local farms and merchants. There are still times when I find I must make a trip out to a big box store in the suburbs, however.
I do try to minimize my trips there. I felt better about going last night because, not only did I only purchase items on my list, but I brought one of my friends, who is also a neighbor with me. So, instead of each of us driving out there for our required items, we were able to save energy by taking only one car.
Besides, errand running is much more fun when you can visit with a friend at the same time.

Michelle, a lot of the NC produce at Whole Foods comes from Eastern Carolina Organics in Pittsboro which is not far from you. You can purchase full cases and perhaps run a co-op type thing with some friends. If it wasn't three hours from us I would sooo do it. That is where we used to get our produce for our organic shop. After a while, business dropped and I did not like driving that far to get produce (environmental reasons) Besides, we have a local organic farm now!!! Yipee! You might buy some of their stuff one day at Whole Foods b/c they sell to ECO! There is an organic farm in Willow Springs I think, maybe one other close town.
Greg has told me his grocery store is adding more organics, who knows what that means though....
PS - that's neat you shopped with a friend. It's easy for us to pick up foods (not really the foods I want, but it is New Bern!!) but simply b/c of where Greg works. I hope he'll fix my bicycle soon though, sometimes a walk would take too long and I wouldn't have time to bring him dinner if I did not drive, but my bike would be perfect for that! Granted he could bring dinner, but lately our schedules don't give us much time together, so thats my time with him.
