I really like gift bags because they are a lot easier to save and reuse than wrapping paper. It's a bonus that even my non-environmentally minded family saves and reuses them!
Neil and I finally got around to celebrating Valentine's Day last night. We went out for my favorite kind of cuisine - Indian food. Afterwards, we exchanged gifts.
I wrapped Neil's gift in a shiny pink gift bag that we'd received a wedding present in over four years ago. It has been passed back and forth between us ever since.
After opening his present, Neil went downstairs and returned with the same bag for me to open! We shared a good laugh over it.
Funny, I can't remember what was originally in that shiny pink bag. I wonder if we have gotten as much mileage out of whatever it happened to be!

A friend of mine lives across the country from me, and we mail each other gifts once or twice a year. For at least five years we kept sending back and forth the same box, and it gathered more and more layers of tape atop it. It amused us as much as the contents of the packages. :)
I wish we could do it with the gifts...I mean, I wish it was acceptable to give "gently used" gifts. It's the thought that counts, right? And, sometimes I see something that would be perfect for someone if it only wasn't...used. Maybe I'm just cheap.
We try to reuse gift bags, too! This post has inspired me to switch to using gift bags instead of wrapping paper for more of my gifts. Thanks!
I do give "gently used" gifts, depending on the recipient. For instance, if I'm giving a book, I'll try the used bookstore in town first, since the fact that a book is used doesn't affect the pleasure derived from reading the story! My friends and I do the same with kitchenwares and other types of gifts, too.
Some people might find it weird, but you could try writing a card telling the recipient how you found the gift and immediately thought of him/her, and how you're trying to be environmentally friendly by giving a gently used gift.
